SHREE PAVANPUTRA VYAYAM MANDIR was established in November 1963. The founders, Late Mr. R. H. PATHARE a freedom fighter of India, and the present Secretary, Mr. S. R. Pathare, converted the institution into a Public Trust in 1974 to make it broad based, public oriented and offer better services to the youth of Chembur area.

The institution commenced its activities on the small private plot owned by Pathare Brothers and continues to function at the said place even today.

As pioneers of modern Gymnastics, in Maharashtra, we were actively associated with Mallakhamb Training in 1963. Our
sportsmen, Shri. Pradeep Chemburkar and Shri. Ulhas Karpe, brought laurels in 1967 in Mallakhamb & Gymnastics Championship held at Agartala. Our recognition in the Gymnastics field first came at that event. Started as Mallakhamb training centre with 5 wards, the institution now tutors more than 500 students – most of them in the Gymnastics faculty.

When we started teaching Gymnastics, trained teachers were not available and therefore we had to rely on books and films. The Gymnastics equipments were also not available and therefore, based on the relevant books, we influenced local manufacturers to manufacturer the said equipments accordingly. Our wards started taking part in Gymnastics competitions at the state and national level in 1967. Mr. Vinay Vesavkar at Jhansi won our first national Gymnastics Medal in 1976. Our first two national champions, were Mr. Mahendra Chemburkar and Miss. Majushree Chivte, who won the National All Around Championships in Artistic Gymnastics. They were part of the Indian Gymnastics team of the 1982 Asiad Championships held at Delhi. Miss Minal Deshpande from our Gymnasium was the International Referee to represent India in the same championships.

In 1988, we started training in Rhythmic Gymnastics. Miss Komal Patil represented Indian Team in Junior Ashiad Competitions held at Delhi in 1992. Mr. Ashutosh Potnis represented in the Artistic Gymnastics in the same championships. In 1991 the National and International Power Lifting Competitions, Mr. Sajeevan Bhaskaran was selected as the Strong Man of India, who soon after, did the miracle in power lifting by establishing a world record in the Dead Lift – 52 kgs. Category, under the coaching of our teacher, Mr. Ravindra Kaselkar, This was recognized by the Govt. of India, by giving Arjun Award – the award for highest achievement in respective sports. This was the first Arjun Award in the history of our Gymnasium.
